The author's foreward
Below is the complete text of the authors forward taken straight from the text book:
This goalkeeping coaching manual has taken a few years to come together. Many of the drills have been developed over a period of time and the good news is, there are many more that I have to share; who knows, perhaps another text is around the corner. I have really loved my time coaching goalkeepers and working with other coaches who are passionate about helping these brave, special people.

This manual provides essential goalkeeping skills and specific drills to improve performance. Many of the drills do not specify how many balls or repetitions need to be completed. As goalkeeping coach you will need to assess and monitor your goalkeepers skill level and physical capacity and moderate the drills so as to challenge but not exhaust or injure. This may mean that four or six balls are used in each drill, or it may mean ten or twelve balls are used and two or three repetitions are completed. When a young or beginning goalkeeper is learning how to be a goalkeeper, there is a greater need for repetition and extended practice. As the goalkeeper develops her skills and fitness the number of balls faced often decreases with greater focus and emphasis on the quality of the save not quantity of shots. At an elite level and certainly when I was coaching the Australian goalkeepers, some drills comprised no more than four or five balls (two repetitions) ensuring the goalkeeper worked in game scenarios. Most drills, however, comprised six, seven or eight balls (two or three repetitions).

I hope you enjoy reading this text and I hope it helps you develop your knowledge about the unique position of goalkeeper. It's a great position to play and to coach.

My sincere thanks to former Hockeyroos goalkeeper and Olympic Gold Medallist, Rachel Imison OAM, who is pictured throughout this coaching manual and to Alan Wetherly, who has patiently worked with my diagrams and notes to produce the 220 drills detailed here in this book.
